Privacy Policy

How we handle your information — clearly and honestly.

Last updated: April 8, 2026

Overview

The Midterm Project is a free, nonpartisan voter education resource for the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. We respect your privacy and are committed to being transparent about what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

We do not sell your data. We do not use third-party tracking or analytics services. We do not serve ads. This project is a volunteer effort with no commercial interest in your personal information.

What we collect

The information we collect depends on how you use the site. Most of the site can be browsed without providing any personal information at all.

Contact form

If you reach out through our contact form, we collect your name, email address, subject, and message. This information is stored securely and used only to respond to your inquiry.

Volunteer sign-up

If you sign up to volunteer, we collect your name, email address, state, areas of interest, relevant experience, and availability. This information is used to coordinate volunteer efforts and is stored securely. When you submit a volunteer application, an email notification is sent to our team using Brevo (a transactional email service) so we can follow up with you.

Portal accounts

If you create a portal account, we collect your email address for authentication purposes. You may optionally provide a display name, state, and congressional district. Your ballot selections, quiz scores, and activity within interactive features (such as games and civic action pledges) are stored to personalize your experience and track your progress.

Browser storage

Some features use your browser's local storage to remember your preferences and selections (such as temporary ballot choices or UI settings). This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers unless you are signed into a portal account.

What we don't collect

We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any other third-party tracking or analytics tools. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels. We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or any device sensor data. We do not collect any information from children under 13. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.

How we store and protect your data

Your data is stored in a secure database hosted by Supabase, which provides encryption at rest and in transit. Authentication is handled through Supabase Auth using secure, industry-standard methods (magic links and password reset via email). Our website is hosted on Vercel and served over HTTPS.

We use Brevo solely to send transactional email notifications to our volunteer coordination team when a new volunteer application is submitted. Brevo does not receive or have access to any other user data.

Third-party services

The site fetches publicly available data from government and news sources to provide you with accurate election information. These include the Congress.gov API, the Federal Election Commission (OpenFEC) API, and public news RSS feeds from outlets like ProPublica, PBS NewsHour, and The Guardian. These services do not receive any of your personal information from us.

Your choices

You can browse the vast majority of this site without providing any personal information. If you have created a portal account and would like your data deleted, or if you submitted a contact form or volunteer application and want that information removed, you can submit a request on our account deletion page and we will delete your data within 7 business days.

You can clear browser local storage at any time through your browser settings to remove any locally stored preferences.

Changes to this policy

If we make significant changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
